Warehouse Optimization Guide

A well-designed warehouse cuts picking time in half. The principles are simple; the discipline is what matters.

Slotting

Place fast movers at waist height near the dispatch door. Slow movers go up high or far away. Re-slot every quarter based on movement data.

Putaway logic

Random storage with location codes beats fixed bins. The system tracks where every unit lives; pickers follow the screen, not memory.

Picking paths

Batch picks across multiple orders. Sequence the path to minimise back-tracking. A picker should never walk past a location twice in one trip.

Cycle counting

Count one zone every day on rotation. By month-end, the whole warehouse is counted with zero downtime.

Receiving

Cross-dock when possible — straight from the truck to dispatch for pre-allocated orders. Skip the shelf entirely.

How InventorySaaS helps

Location-coded inventory, mobile-app putaway and picking, batch pick optimisation, and rotating cycle counts — all on commodity Android scanners.
